The OBG Physiotherapy Department of SDM College of Physiotherapy, Under NSS Unit 3 of SDM University Dharwad successfully conducted an awareness session on Role of Physiotherapy in breastfeeding (Establishment and support) on August 2nd, 2025. This initiative was part of the university’s ongoing commitment to maternal and child health, conducted in the presence of esteemed dignitaries and community members.
The session commenced with an inaugural address by Dr. Sunil K. S., Head of the Department of OBG Physiotherapy, who emphasized the vital role of mother’s milk in an infant's growth and development. His motivating words set the tone for the session, highlighting the importance of awareness and support for breastfeeding mothers.
This was followed by an educational talk by Dr. Shweta Bhatbolan, who spoke on:
- The benefits of breastfeeding for both the mother and child
- Proper ergonomic seating and posture during breastfeeding to prevent musculoskeletal discomfort
- Practical strategies to support continued breastfeeding
- Recognizing red flags that warrant consultation with a physician or physiotherapist
The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Sanjay Parmar, HOD of SDM College of Physiotherapy, Dr. Salima Bijapuri, NSS Unit 3 Officer, and Dr. Sangeeta, who lent their support and encouragement to the event.
The venue was tastefully decorated with blue and pink balloons, symbolizing care for both male and female infants. A sustainable bouquet, thoughtfully prepared by physiotherapy students, was presented to the dignitaries. A poster on the role of physiotherapy in breastfeeding was created and displayed using a moving board, effectively conveying key messages to attendees.
The event witnessed active participation from postnatal patients along with their caretakers, totaling an audience of around 28 individuals. The interactive session helped raise awareness and offered demonstration and practical guidance, promoting both maternal well-being and infant care.
This awareness session aimed to improve the awareness on role of physiotherapy and early identification of concerns and where to seek help in continuing breastfeeding, thus empowering breastfeeding mothers.
