The Paediatric Physiotherapy Department at the S.D.M. College of Physiotherapy has a strong national reputation and a rich history of excellent student education, innovative research and valuable service to the profession of Physiotherapy and the community.
The department has been catering to the rehabilitation needs of kids aged 1 day to 18 years since 2004. The department delivers around 900 - 1000 therapy sessions per month. The department provides rehabilitation services for various musculoskeletal (post traumatic joint stiffness, CTEV, Perthe's disease, rickets, Low back pain in paediatrics etc.), neuromuscular (Cerebral Palsy, Gullian Barrie syndrome, Downs syndrome, Rett's syndrome, West's syndrome, Joubert syndrome, Sturge Weber's syndrome, Marinesco-Sjogren syndrome etc.) and cardio-respiratory conditions (pre- and post-operative congenital and acquired cardiorespiratory conditions in NICU, PICU and early intervention in the neonates). Other areas presently being managed in the paediatric physiotherapy department are autism spectrum disorders, visual dysfunctions, brachial plexus injuries, genetic and metabolic disorders, disorders of hand writing and hand function, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, gastrointestinal dysfunctions, incontinence of bladder and bowel, vestibular dysfunctions and paediatric obesity.
- Health and disease related Screening/ surveys and assessment camps are organised in urban and rural setups individually or in collaboration with local NGOs and various government bodies, school and colleges.
- Public Awareness in the form of talks/lectures/articles/radio talk are done by the faculty.
- Assessment and Treatment camps are organised under various specialities like Neurology conditions, orthopaedic related conditions, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and general health and hygiene.
Outreach Programmes
The department also caters to various Government and Private Schools for special children in Hubballi and Dharwad. It is also actively involved in various paediatric screening and assessment camps conducted through the college.
Inpatient Services
Staff treat the cases in the NICU and PICU. Children from NICU and PICU are assessed on day 1 of reference and treatment protocols are planned by the staff in-charge for IP at the time of reference. All cases are treated as per requirement depending on the condition of the child. The type of cases seen in the NICU, PICU and ward are
- Motor developmental delay (Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, West's Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Meningomylocele, Encephalitis, Meningitis, Porphyria, DMD, BMD, Congenital Myopathies, Congenital Neuropathies, GBS, etc.)
- Post fracture/dislocation rehabilitation following conservative and surgically managed orthopaedic pediatric patients.
- Gait training
- Infective conditions
- Oro motor rehabilitation
- Burns rehabilitation
- Pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with pneumonia, foreign body aspiration, post surgical.
- Bladder and bowel incontinence
- Visual rehabilitation

Outpatient Services
Our Pediatric physiotherapy team, along with referring medical specialists, develops programs tailored to patient's specific needs. These include working with patient one-on-one in important areas such as development, flexibility, vision, balance and coordination. All physiotherapy treatment is conducted in the ultramodern, patient-friendly environment of physiotherapy OPD and designed to not just rehabilitate but educate patient on preventing future complications.
The Pediatric physiotherapy OPD offers seamless care for patients with any type of joint, muscle, connective tissue injury, CNS injury, nerve problem, hyper activity, autism, other developmental disorder. Our renowned Pediatric rehabilitation specialist's team treats both pre- and post-surgical patients, as well as non-surgical disorders and injuries.Physiotherapy services are also rendered by the staff at the USHAS Center for Exceptional Children and the Mentally Retarded Government Girls School in Hubballi. The physiotherapy department in USHAS Center has been facilitated by S.D.M. College of Physiotherapy since the last 15 years with physical developmental, oromotor, visual and sensory issues being treated through various modalities such as exercises, sensory integration, hippotherapy, hydrotherapy, electrical stimulation and Wii games for hand rehabilitation.
