Physiotherapist is one of the important members of plastic surgery rehabilitation team. Physiotherapist plays a broad role in health promotion, health education and self-care. This includes advising and teaching patients & care givers in order to provide individuals’ independence and well-being. Physiotherapist provides high quality evidence based assessment and treatment during the rehabilitation period. Physiotherapist in Plastic Surgery treats and rehabilitates patients with both non-surgical and surgical conditions.
The aim of Physiotherapist here in Plastic surgery department, SDM Hospital is to help the patient recover quickly after surgery. The success is also considered on the patient's compliance to the instructions. Physiotherapist is closely associated with the Plastic surgery department in order to provide the most appropriate care at the right time. Patients are treated in the wards and as Out Patients as well. The department is well equipped with all modern and latest equipment’s and is situated in the first floor of Manjushree block. Patients are taken care by qualified and well experienced staff.
Inpatient Services
Once the patient gets admitted for planned surgery in the wards and is referred for physiotherapy then immediately the physiotherapist visits bedside, takes detail assessment and starts preoperative treatment.
Physiotherapist is efficiently able to treat post-operative conditions like: Flexor tendon repair in hand, Extensor tendon repair in hand, Crush injury of hand, Correction of deformities of hands and feet, Tendon release, Tendon transfer, Tendon repairs, Torticollis, Degloving injuries, Various types of skin grafting & flap surgeries, Reconstructive surgeries, Adhered or contracted scar release, Contracture release, Nerve repair, Nerve grafting, Ulcers etc.
Physiotherapist provides tailored rehabilitation program after thorough assessment, evaluation, clinical reasoning, goal-setting and problem-solving approaches as per patient’s need. Patients receive individual assessments and treatment sessions.
Injuries to hand can be very problematic for the patients as most of the time hands are used for the daily activities of living. So, here therapist combines and uses the knowledge of both science and art, to get back the lost function of the hands.
Whereas the plan focuses on: Education and protection (for: Skin care in sensory loss, Correct positioning of various involved joints, Edema management), Pain management, Soft tissues mobilization techniques, Soft tissue stretching techniques, Joint mobilization techniques, Joint manipulation techniques, Facilitatory techniques, Intermittent Galvanic Stimulation, Surged Faradic re-education, Muscle strengthening techniques, Re-education for precision & power grips, Proprioceptive & Co-ordination facilitation techniques, Sensory re-education, Incorporation of adaptive devices for functional assistance.
Outpatient Services
Once the patients are discharged from the wards they are followed as Out patients in the physiotherapy OPD. Our physiotherapist is also present in the Plastic surgery OPD where cases are discussed, selected and referred to the physiotherapy department for the management; once they come, physiotherapist assesses in detail & develops programs including manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, application of electro-physical modalities, necessary splints, orthosis or walking aids and strategies to help them manage their daily activities as per their specific needs.
Conditions which are taken care includes: Post-operative discharged wards patients, Peripheral nerve injuries including Brachial plexus injuries, Flexible deformities, Stiff hand, Adhered Scar, Hypertrophic scars, Keloids.
Equipments Used By Physiotherapist
Different types of equipments and modalities are used by the physiotherapist in the department to achieve goals on the right time for the patients. These include Various types of current stimulators for nerve and muscle stimulation, Therapeutic ultrasound, Whirl pool (hydrotherapy tank), LASER, Cryotherapy Unit, Contrast bath, Paraffin wax bath, Hydro collator packs, Silastic sheets, Pressure garments, Hand exercise table, Dumb bells, Weight cuffs, Dynamometer, Medicine balls, Vestibular balls, Therabands, Theratubes, Manipulation table, Static & dynamic splints, Other exercise & electrotherapeutic equipments as per necessity.
